OPEX Reference Group – NA/EU Chapters Explore Why Digital Transformation Fails Without Adoption

The Operational Excellence (OPEX) Reference Group – NA & EU Chapters, powered by PRIME BPM, hosted its latest Live Meetup, bringing together transformation, operational excellence, and change management professionals to explore one of the most critical challenges facing modern organizations: ensuring employees adopt and embrace change.

The virtual meetup featured Adam Schreiber, Transformation Change & Communications Leader at PepsiCo, who delivered an insightful session on “Digital Transformation Without Adoption Is Just Expensive Change.”

Drawing on his experience leading enterprise-wide transformation initiatives at PepsiCo and previously at Johnson & Johnson, PwC, etc., Adam shared practical perspectives on why successful transformation extends far beyond technology implementation.

The session highlighted that while organizations continue to invest heavily in digital transformation, technology alone does not deliver business outcomes. Sustainable results are achieved when organizations successfully align people, processes, communication, and change management to drive adoption at scale.

Adam explained that transformation initiatives often fail when organizations focus primarily on deploying new systems rather than preparing employees to embrace new ways of working. He emphasized that adoption should be viewed as a strategic business outcome rather than a post-implementation activity.

Digital transformation is only successful when people change the way they work. Without adoption, organizations risk investing significant resources into initiatives that never deliver their intended value, said Adam during the session.

Key Discussion Highlights Included:

  • Why employee adoption is the true measure of transformation success
  • Common reasons digital transformation initiatives fail to achieve expected outcomes
  • The role of change management in driving sustainable business transformation
  • How communication strategies influence adoption and employee engagement
  • Aligning people, process, and technology to maximize transformation value
  • Building organizational readiness before implementing large-scale change
  • Practical approaches for leading transformation across complex global organizations
  • Creating a culture that supports continuous change and innovation

The session generated valuable discussion among operational excellence and transformation professionals across North America and Europe, with participants exploring the challenges of implementing change across large and diverse organizations.

Adam also shared insights from leading enterprise transformation programs within global organisations, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement, communication, capability building, and leadership alignment throughout the transformation journey.
